AUBMC hospital is a replica of an actual hospital, and it is divided into three departments: an emergency room, an operating room, and a nursery. After choosing the activity they would like to participate in, guests receive a brief of the mission they will be embarking on in either of the following departments:
The Emergency Room ER: Guests can be part of the emergency team. Once on the team, they are assigned specific tasks such as checking the pulse rate, holding the lamp, or wiping an injured patient. This activity helps guests build knowledge about the ER and its procedures. Also, guests understand what it means to think of others before ourselves, to operate under pressure and to assume big responsibilities such as putting the health of another human being in our own hands.
A real Operating Room OR: Guests will explore the medical world. After watching a real endoscopy of a liver transplant happening on a dummy, guests will then participate in a similar activity and assume a particular responsibility under the guidance of an educator. Once the operation is done, guests meet with doctors and brief them on the operation and the diagnosis of the patient that they have treated. In this activity, guests learn about the procedures taken in an operation, the sequence in which tasks are carried out, the pressure a surgeon undergoes during an operation and the concept of helping others. Because they will be taught the different surgical instruments, guests will gain the advantage of expanding their medical vocabulary.
A real nursery: In this activity, guests understand the role of a nurse who works in the pediatrics department. Children learn all about newborn baby items and materials. With the help of an educator, guests give babies a bath, and then they powder and diaper them. Once done, they bottle-feed the babies milk and put them to bed. This activity increases the guests’ awareness of the parenting world and its challenges and provides a snapshot into the future when the guests will have to raise their own babies patiently and conscientiously.
